On July 25th- 26th, the SunVeil Team exhibited at the Texas PTA Show where PTA members from all over Texas showed up to see what new products, services, and opportunities would be presented in 2010. As a shade structure manufacturer, naturally, the SunVeil Team was focused on those interested in protecting their students and teachers from the harmful UV rays that are especially prevalent in Texas.

In our conversations, the issue that came up repeatedly was that of funding. Teachers and parents alike all exhibited an interest in shade for their playgrounds, parking lots, or walkways, but the conversation always seemed to turn back to the lack of funds. In response to this issue, we have decided to put together a list of ideas and resources that we
hope will help you reach your goals.

1. Google “Shade Grants”

This is the first place to start if you are looking for shade funding. There are several grants available for shade, all of which will be listed in this post, and a quick Google search will pull up a number of very good resources.

2. American Academy of Dermatology

Each year the AAD awards grants in the amount of $8,000 to those that purchase shade structures for the purpose of UV protection. This is an amazing source of funding; however, the process is rather intensive and takes about a year to be awarded the funding. The grants for this year have already closed, but for those interested in funding for 2011, it would be a good idea to contact the AAD now to get the ball rolling.

3. Shonda Schilling Shade Foundation of America

This shade foundation is dedicated to educating children and the community in the prevention and detection of skin cancer and the importance of practicing sun safety. 4. Getting the Community involved

Through our talks with the Texas PTA members, we heard a number of very good ideas to raise money for shade. Below are the two that stood out the most:

Business Sponsorship

• Grants are an excellent way to fund a shade project but can often be very time consuming. Getting local business to sponsor the shade structure is a fast and mutually beneficial way to expedite the process.For example, if a structure costs $5,000-$8,000, then getting 10 local sponsors with equal donations would cover most if not all of the cost of the structure. To show appreciation for their generosity, we recommend placing a plaque with all of the donor’s names next to the structure. A ribbon cutting ceremony is also a way to extend your gratitude and create an opportunity to get the community involved as well!

Pennies for Playgrounds

• This idea was shared with us at the PTA show and we feel compelled to pass it along. Basically, a school that was in need of a new park lacked the funding in their budget to build one- sound familiar? Instead of going to the same resources in the community that they always had, the PTA and teachers of the school decided to get the students involved. Over the course of the school year, each student collected as many pennies as possible and donated them to the playground fund. At the end of the year, the children had collected an AMAZING 1 MILLION PENNIES!!! As a result, the $10,000 raised was more than enough to fund their park. Now, not only do the children have a great place to play, they also can take pride in the fact that they were responsible for getting it built!While the program was used to build a park in this instance, there is no reason it can’t be utilized for shade as well.
